I brand this constantly, and then much so that my family has asked for a reprieve, but I will pass forth my tips: Some of the bags of cubed hashbrowns they sell are no longer 2 lbs. then check carefully. I detect generic to be the all-time. I utilise a 2c. bag of precipitous cheddar in place of the american cheese; any cheese will work, but we prefer the sharper flavor. I too cut back on butter, it's just non necessary. I nuke the potatoes for most 10 minutes alone or thaw them in the refrigerator overnight for a creamier consistency. For brunches, I use O'Brien potatoes (hash browns with the potatoes and onions and peppers already added), use cream of potato instead of chicken and add a pkg of precooked bacon crumbled up. Yum, people rave over that for breakfast!

I take used this recipe for several years for a side dish at dinner or for brunch. One affair I do to make life easier is to put the sour cream, soup, cheese (cutting in large chunks) and onions in the food processor and chop away. This saves the fourth dimension that information technology would take to grate cheese and mince onions.
05/24/2006
This recipe is so unproblematic and succulent it is insane! I have made it iii times now and to each repast it has been perfect. It is an cheap, piece of cake addition to a meal, or a quick and unproblematic primary course with a salad (vinegrette dressing would exist ideal. Give it a go.. it's yummy!
07/13/2002
I've used a version of this recipe for years. I generally apply frozen hash browns and when in a existent compression, frozen chopped onions and pre-shredded cheese. You can mix it upwards and throw it in the oven while you're dressing and within the hr y'all're out the door to your next 'do. For a quick brunch or light dinner, add cubed ham and broccoli florets. A wonderful, family-friendly one-pan dish.
ten/thirteen/2001
This was good. I agree with some of the other reviewers, that there was likewise much butter. There was a small lake of butter at the lesser of the dish. Merely cut back a little on that and it'southward wonderful.
12/03/2002
I dearest this recipe...it's so easy. One time I was in a existent hurry...I had no sour cream and I had no onions. And so, instead of the sour foam, I added a can of foam of mushroom soup and mixed it in the blender with the other soup and some milk and substituted that. I besides used dried onion flakes. I really enjoyed it this way and accept changed my recipe and so I'll make it the same way each time.
09/28/2006
Corrupt and YUMMIE! How could information technology be bad with all the creamy buttery goodness? I can't follow a recipe so I subbed O'Brien potatoes that have onion and green pepper so I wouldn't accept to cutting up the onion. Besides used Cheddar instead of american cheese. Delicious!
12/25/2011
This is the closest recipe I could find to the one I lost. It's always a big hit. There are a few shortcuts I accept that make this much easier and quicker to make. I use the shredded hash browns and don't even accept to bother with thawing them. I as well apply onion powder as opposed to chopped onions considering some people in my family don't like onions but that way I can nevertheless get the flavour. You lot can too discover boxes of cornflake crumbs that save you from having to do information technology yourself....I ever keep one on hand and I utilize information technology for other things as well. I likewise don't employ the butter as other people have stated, only I do employ xvi oz of sour cream and a two c purse of cheddar. For a little scrap amend topping, I add together more shredded cheese to the cornflake crumbs (some melted butter can be added to the crumbs, and it would probably be all-time, merely I commonly don't bother). Nevertheless, one tip to this recipe....cover the casserole with with foil for the get-go 30 minutes or so of cooking. Uncover and and so add your crumbs (and cheese if desired) and bake uncovered for some other fifteen-20 minutes or so. I wouldn't bake it with the crumb topping for the entire time.
08/27/2002
It was very good although next time I will double the corporeality of corn flakes. This recipe is a keeper!
05/14/2003
This was a pretty tasty recipe, simply I didn't like it enough to serve at a gathering, it'due south nothing special. It's fine for home, although I don't know if I'd go far once again. My only big complaint is that I checked the dorsum of the hash brown pototes purse (I thought I spotted a new recipe to endeavour) and I did spot a recipe - this very SAME ane! The but difference was they asked for one/4 cup butter, not one/2, it had the corn flake topping and everything. Picky hubby said information technology was pretty good.
12/31/2002
First-class, easy and with a quick mix of the ingrediants, your easily are free to complete the main meal. I added some chopped green/ruby-red bong peppers and ane/four loving cup minced green onions, which added some kick. I too used a fiddling less butter merely overall, I would continue to make this again!
08/10/2010
Nosotros liked this, but it was literally pond in butter when the recipe was doubled. I think in the future I'll leave out the butter in the casserole role completely, and use half every bit much for the cornflake topping. Other than that, information technology's something I would brand again.
12/27/2010
Honey this casserole! Been making a variation of it for years, we apply precipitous shredded cheddar and it's awesome!
12/24/2010
great/like shooting fish in a barrel recipe...added a can of drained green chilis to give it a lil zippo...will def brand once again
09/thirty/2009
For united states, a traditional vacation dish. The buttery cereal crumbs on tiptop are a existent hit!
04/07/2010
I had a Allrecipes Easter Brunch this twelvemonth. I made the white potato casserole along with many other recipes from Allrecipes. Obviously, frozen hash browns don't come in a 2 pound bag whatsoever more. It was reduced past several ounces. I reduced the butter to 3/4 cup total. Adjacent fourth dimension I will reduce the cheese by a bit and add more than onion. Otherwise, it was super.
09/04/2008
This was delicious!! I used cream of Celery soup and cheddar cheese and information technology was a huge hit!! It is easy to brand rhis in larger volumes to feed more people!! My daughter has asked me to make this for her Cheerleading team dinner every bit a side and I volition double the recipe.
09/01/2005
I used this recipe for a brunch served the morning afterward my girl'south wedding. It was very successful---I heard but positive comments. I followed the recipe except cut back on the corporeality of melted butter and cutting the amount of shredded cheese in half. I think yous could add some chopped chive to further heighten the season. Information technology is a "definite" to make it to my regular recipe box . . . even the bride asked for the recipe.
08/20/2010
This is my favorite potato dish. It is perfect for whatever occasion and everyone loves it! I don't usually put the corn fleck topping on though. But other than that follow the recipe verbal. Yous will discover many other recipes that omit the butter, but to me that'southward the best part! I don't utilise the shredded hash browns, but the chunky ones. And make certain your potatoes are completely thawed, you want the casserole to exist soft. This will be the outset to go at whatsoever become-togethers so don't program on leftovers.
10/23/2002
I enjoyed this dish, I passed it on to my girl to make for my son-in-police force, Brian, I know he'll love information technology, information technology is named after him, correct?
09/04/2009
I made this dish to become with Amish Meatloaf and it was a hitting. I used O'Brien Hashbrowns considering that's what I had in the freezer. I also used cream of mushroom soup with roasted garlic and accidentally omitted one-half the butter. I topped it with crushed Boondocks House crackers because I was out of cornflakes.Make certain y'all thaw the potatoes first considering it will have longer to broil them if they are frozen. My family liked it very much and my bf had the small corporeality that was left over for breakfast. Thanks for sharing this recipe! I'll brand it again, it was yummy!
09/27/2008
I used this for a church building function and it went over and then well I am using it for my fathers 75th b-mean solar day party and serve it with prime rib and salads.
09/10/2013
I used dissimilar cheeses (cleaning out the frig) and information technology turned out delicious.
01/27/2001
This is very easy to make and my family loved it. I used the O'Brians frozen hashbrowns...really skilful. I will make it once again.
02/23/2009
I loved this recipe as a child and made it terminal dark for the first fourth dimension. The only tweeks i fabricated were not adding salt, equally the condensed soup, has enough, and i splashed a piffling craven broth and a splash of milk. I used the saltine crackers as the topping and it was and then creamy. Likewise if yous buy the frozen hashbrowns with red, green pepper and onion it saves a footstep.
02/22/2002
This is wonderful! My father-in-law stopped by the 24-hour interval I made this. He hates potatoes, but when he tried these, he actually asked for the recipe! I will go along this recipe handy - I plan on making it quite often. My ii yr old loved it, also! Thanks!
05/12/2012
Always good. Can use whatsoever shredded cheese. Can use crushed crackers, buttery or other for corn flakes which I never take. The unequal in this recipe & some other on-site is that at that place'southward no need to cover. I always use a Full of 1/2 c. butter & information technology's just as good.
12/02/2009
My married man's favorite!
08/02/2010
I am always requested to make this. It is rich and filling and very like shooting fish in a barrel to make
09/29/2002
Simple to assemble, no mess no carp, and information technology is the hit of the meal every time I fix it, which is oftentimes.
04/26/2010
Brought this to a potluck and everyone loved information technology. Total comfort food and oh so fattening, only who cares when it tastes this good?! I have made this one-half a dozen times now and it always gets gobbled upwards. Very filling. Oh, I did use orange aged cheddar cheese instead of American for more tang.
09/14/2006
This is admittedly succulent with a few adjustments. I used the hashbrowns with peppers and onions and sharp cheddar instead of american cheese. Also used crushed potato chips on summit instead of cereal.
04/04/2004
Delish! (Just a annotation: Some of what looks similar melted butter may be oil/fatty from the cheese, not butter. That withal doesn't make it health-food, simply sometimes yous just take to alive a footling.) This is quick, like shooting fish in a barrel, and very tastey so I'yard all for it. Plus, yous can add together accent ingredients to put your personal tounch on information technology. This can be made fancy for more formal meals or a coincidental brunch dish.
02/20/2010
This was only ok. With all the great reviews, I thought information technology would taste ameliorate. Not as good as the potato casserole I usually make. Butter can exist completely omitted. I simply used a little bit, and it was not necessary.
01/09/2010
My sister makes a recipe like this about every Christmas. This year I was hosting Christmas and was looking to make sure we had anybody's favorite... "cheesy potatoes" for dinner. I was told these were even better than my sisters! Will definitely be making these a lot. I fifty-fifty made them after new years since my kids couldn't become plenty of them. Their only downside...they're not very diet friendly!!
05/x/2009
Awesome recipe! I exercise make a few changes. Cut the first ane/2 loving cup of butter out and I use cheddar cheese in stead of American cheese. I besides use Frosted Flakes instead of corn chip! I become requests to bring this to potlucks all the time! Beloved it!
08/03/2010
Anybody in my family asks me to bring this to become-togethers!! Yummy!!!
eleven/23/2013
Loved by all at a potluck. Modifications I made: I used Potatoes O'Brien instead of hash browns and added a portion of a 2nd bag to equal 2 lbs. total. The potatoes were completely thawed when I started assembling. Sauteed the chopped onion with 3/iv loving cup of extra chopped green and red peppers; seasoned them with salt, pepper, and garlic powder; combined this with the tater mixture. I besides cut downward a lot of the butter as other reviewers did. I only used nearly 2 TBSP in the potato mixture, and roughly iv TBSP. to drizzle over the topping. I also had to substitute crushed Caesar croutons for the cornflakes. Came out perfectly! Not watery in the least and super tasty.
03/18/2018
I honey these potatoes, and have made them for many years! I call them "crack" considering I can eat them all in the matter of a couple of days as leftovers. I basically crave them! I couldnt find my original recipe, and so All Recipes to the rescue, and I would like to offer a variation to anyone interested...(with no disrespect meant to the original!) 1) I significantly reduced the butter, only using 2 TBS full because I as well found it to exist too greasy. Here is what I practice: I cook 2 TBS butter in the 9x13 pan before I put the potatoes in. This helps to well-baked the bottom of the potatoes, and likewise it gets sucked up into it! I've also used an boosted two TBS and drizzled over the top simply before I put into the oven. Makes it extra flavorful and decadent, simply not every bit greasy. 2) I use Ore-Ida Make "Potatoes O'Brien" - chopped potatoes with chopped onion and dark-green & red pepper already in it! Then simple! No need to chop or add extra onion and the peppers make it pretty! If you lot dont like the peppers, so y'all can always use the obviously potatoes like the original calls for. Plus, I think this style of white potato makes it easier to serve! 3) I really mix the potatoes with the soup/sour foam mixture BEFORE putting it into my buttered pan. I've tried to just put the mixture on acme of the potatoes before blistering, but I notice the soup mixture doesn't seep all the way down to the potatoes on the lesser, then they dont get all the flavour! I promise you savor this recipe as much equally I accept over t
12/09/2003
I would have rated this a five, but I think the butter needs to be cut way downwardly. It was a tasty dish, just the entire matter was just pond in butter. The only alter I fabricated was to saute the onions beforehand. The next fourth dimension I brand this, the butter is going to be reduced by one-half in both steps of the recipe.
07/17/2001
Delicious! Served it at Brunch, all asked for the recipe. I used Potatoes O'Brien (store make), added one small whole onion, almost one/ii loving cup more than of sour cream and one/two cup of Garlic Cheddar Cheese along with the Cheddar I put into the recipe. I didn't utilize the cornflakes, baked the dish for 45 min. put more cheese on acme returned it to the oven for an additional 15 min. Didn't take to put any leftovers abroad! Kaye
05/31/2002
Kids would honey this because of the cheese and potato combination. The taste is slap-up!
12/28/2009
I pulled this recipe for my mom to brand on Christmas. She followed it exactly, except at the cease she simply used 1/4 loving cup of butter on the corn flakes. Oh, and we as well used cheddar cheese. We all loved it! You lot actually tin can't go incorrect with so much cheese and sour cream. Might add together a piddling bit of pepper adjacent time, but otherwise, perfect!
08/18/2008
This is an old merely tried-and-true recipe. I don't get adding the chicken soup, so I always add cream of potato. I usually skip the cornflake topping, besides, and it's however a good alternative if you don't want to brand au gratin potatoes from scratch.... which, by the way, is simple to make only more time-consuming.
04/thirteen/2004
There are several recipes posted that are very close to this one and I used this one every bit the "base" for my version based on the ingredients I had on manus. Reviewers comments were that there was a lot of butter, then I made a lower fat version. I used virtually ane/iv cup of butter to saute the onions and used healthy asking mushroom soup and low fat sour cream and low fat cheddar cheese. I also added near 2 cups of chopped leftover Easter ham. I just sprinkled a bit of cheese on the height, as I didn't accept whatever cornflakes. I was hoping for leftovers, but the kids only loved it. They even ate all of their steamed califlower so they could heve seconds. The dazzler of this recipe is that it is very flexible so you can vary the gustation with what you have on hand. Next time I'll put in some chopped peppers and try the topping. Cheers Suzanne.
02/05/2012
yum! I use the frozen potatoes that already have onion and peppers usually, merely otherwise I just add together dried minced onion and that does the play tricks, besides (and saves a footstep, not having to chop up onions!). To make information technology slightly healthier, I omitted the butter completely, used fat gratis/calorie-free sour cream, and cheese made from 2% milk (cheddar and colby jack instead of american), and they still turned out smashing. All around, this is a groovy basic recipe that you can customize to your own tastes, which makes it a winner in my book!
02/14/2012
this is always a holiday must accept. Nosotros love it so much we call it "THE potatoes"
07/01/2003
I'm sad--I must be the deviant--but I didn't think this was good at all. Both my husband and I were sick from all the butter and the flavor of everything wasn't practiced at all! Ewww!
08/18/2009
Everyone liked this, but adjacent time I will follow other reviewer'southward communication and cut the butter in half. I will also mix the everything just the topping in a bowl before putting in the baking pan.
12/25/2004
Nahhhh!! Lamentable to be the exception to the rule. I usually make a similar recipe that calls for Chedder instead of the American Cheese. The old recipe calls for mixing the ingredients instead of layering - and it turns out creamier and more tasty in my opinion We had vi people at the table and everyone said information technology was different than my old recipe and I should become back to the original.
10/25/2011
Tastes sooo good!!! Thank you for sharing it with us.
12/thirty/2002
Excellent and quick to put together. I take also cut back on the butter and information technology is yet succulent. This recipe allows you to add whatsoever you like on potatoes (i.eastward. peppers or a petty picante) to brand information technology personally yours!
02/01/2009
We did this for Sunday family breakfast, the kids loved it! The only affair I would change is the corporeality of butter, it was a little likewise buttery. I also bought the hash browns with the peppers and onions and it saved a lot of time.
12/31/2002
Excellent, piece of cake and with a quick mix of the ingrediants, your hands are free to complete the main meal. I added some chopped greenish/red bell peppers and 1/4 cup minced greenish onions, which added some kick. I too used a little less butter but overall, I would continue to make this once more!
03/15/2012
Loved it.. I used Cream of Mushroom instead, too used much less butter based off of other reviews. Also I used a cheddar cheese. Will brand again.
07/12/2008
Very good recipe, but it is a footling too oniony for my family. I volition cutting down the onion a bit next time.
11/13/2017
Yummy!
08/27/2005
I make this recipe at Christmas time and my family always wants the recipe. I never come up dwelling house with leftovers.
12/27/2005

04/26/2010
Brought this to a potluck and everyone loved it. Total condolement nutrient and oh so fattening, just who cares when it tastes this good?! I have made this half a dozen times now and it e'er gets gobbled upward. Very filling. Oh, I did use orange anile cheddar cheese instead of American for more tang.

11/07/2017
I have been making this for many years and it is loved good day everyone would give it 10 star if I could I add chopped cooked bacon to it also very good
12/18/2018
Family gathering favorite!
09/30/2007
I first tasted this an part party. Information technology was sooo proficient and golden brown. I serve it with fried catfish fillets and green beans. Delicious!
08/09/2017
I retrieve my Grandma making this for picnics. I made this today for us. She'south 89 and eats like a bird these days. She ate a heaping helping and loved it. I didn't have cornflakes so I used tater chips and it worked great. The sour foam makes this dish. I will make this again!!!
eleven/19/2017
Just thing I did different was not put the topping on. It's a new family unit favorite. Give thanks you for sharing
11/30/2016
Made every bit directed. Great comfort nutrient. Delicious.
05/26/2004
I admittedly dear this recipe. I wouldn't change a thing. My hubby thinks it's the best condolement food. No leftovers when I cook this.
05/03/2005
the flavor of this recipe was great, but it had style too much butter and at that place was no way that a 2 pound bag of hash brown potatoes would work--I used maybe iii/4 of a pound
01/17/2007
Very piece of cake, great flavors! Truly a crowd favorite!
03/10/2019
It's ever a hit at our family Dominicus dinner.
06/06/2007
This was really yummy. My begetter-in-law really liked this besides, which is always wonderful. The 2nd time I fabricated this, I added a packet of dry out ranch dressing. It gave information technology some tang. Both ways were delicious.
04/21/2017
I used green onions and I volition definitely make it again, my family loved it!
11/01/2015
I make this for potlucks and for dinners. I add cream of mushroom soup and ham if information technology is for dinner.
12/22/2004
I changed the recipe slightly and reduced it to ii servings for my boyfriend and myself and it is absolutely fantastic! I am a vegetarian, so I couldn't utilize the cream of chicken soup. Instead I used foam of mushroom soup and added my Boca vegetarian bacon. Mmmmmmmmmmm... information technology was fantastic!
eleven/06/2017
I've fabricated this recipe at least a dozen times. It's e'er a hit at a pot-luck and there are never any leftovers. The ONLY reason I'm rating this a 3 instead of a v is because of the addition of a one/2 stick of butter. Information technology's non needed. The cheese and sour cream have enough butterfat for a rich season and texture. Try it without the added butter. I promise yous'll never miss it.
xi/21/2014
Very piece of cake to brand and was absolutely delicious! Will exist making again for pot lucks.
04/20/2017
This was super easy and very tasteful. Made this for our Easter brunch.
01/19/2022
Great casserole! I used O'Brien potatoes and the cheddar and Gruyère cheeses that I had on mitt. I sautéed the onion before adding. As I had no corn flakes, I topped the casserole with 6-8 Ritz crackers mixed with some crushed French's crispy fried onions. I likewise, cut back on the butter. My family and friends loved information technology!
12/13/2020
I tried to follow the recipe, but my "Mom cooking-sense" kicked in. Subsequently serving this to a football crowd i Dominicus, who have pretty much seen everything, they LOVED IT and wanted the recipe. I did use a 1/iv loving cup of margarine instead of butter and added 8ozs of cheddar and the remaining cheese used Mexican iv-Cheese. Then I read the reviews..... Turned out AWESOME!
04/nineteen/2017
Very like shooting fish in a barrel and tasty. It could have broiled longer, the onions were a piffling crunchy. But we had a full oven with a ham and holiday beans.
ten/16/2017
Recipe turned out awesome. I did cutting back on the butter a little. But other than that, it was very proficient!
03/01/2016
This was a huge hitting at my supper lodge. This is now my become-to recipe for potato casserole. The recipe stands on its own, but here are some changes you lot might consider: -Cream of celery soup instead of cream of craven -Chopped scallions (about 2 bunches) instead of onion -Use cheddar cheese instead of American, and add together some shredded Parmesan cheese to give information technology more depth -Mix melted butter with crushed cereal prior to topping the casserole. Thanks to Mary48 for posting!
x/27/2019
This is a fantastic dish that my family unit fights over. I did not requite it a v as I make this with my own potatoes. I boil them the night before than grate them next day or only brand certain they are cold for easy grating. It really makes a huge departure from frozen if you have the time.
03/01/2008
This recipe is e'er in high demand! Great for potlucks and bbq's. Also I use frosted cornflakes.
09/26/2015
I dear this recipe, but instead of the cornflakes I added potatoe chips on top its a striking for my family.
06/25/2017
I made this and information technology was very skillful. The just thing I might adjust is lowering the amount of total butter used past a impact. Overall the family loved information technology, and it was easy to do!
05/18/2001
I made this with meatloaf and it was VERY proficient. It was all gone by the stop of the day.
04/05/2021
I made information technology merely as directed except substituted cheddar, and everyone commented how much they liked it! Even maxim " keep that recipe"!!
03/06/2003
Mmmm, this was so yummy! Definently a comfort food!! I probably won't exist making often due Simply to the fatty content, but this is absolutely perfect for potlucks - delicious and it makes a whole casserole dish worth!!
07/12/2015
I Really good. Used frozen O'Brian potatoes with onion and peppers already included. I didn't have sour cream, subbed with yogurt + 1 teaspoon blistering powder. Used cream mushroom soup because I served it with beef. Also didn't utilize the cornflakes but added bacon $.25 on acme near the end of cooking. Turned out actually practiced. My hubby, who is super picky, had 3rds. Thanks for a great recipe, Mary48!
12/27/2016
Really turned out well. I put a little extra shredded anile cheddar on pinnacle with french fried onions instead of cornflakes...it was a big striking for brunch.
12/16/2015
Also great without the Cornflakes & butter in the last step. I also used a shredded cheese mix of Cheddar & Mozzarella, instead of American cheese.
xi/21/2018
Super easy and yummy! I ran out of sour cream so used plain yogurt to brand upwardly the deviation. It was still delicious and moist. A potluck favourite. I adopt the cream of chicken soup to the foam of mushroom other recipes suggest.
